Common Beginner Sewing Terms Explained

If you're new to sewing, you might come across terms like topstitch, turning, and right side vs. wrong side in almost every beginner sewing tutorial. Understanding these simple concepts will help you feel more confident as you follow patterns and instructions.

The right side of fabric refers to the printed or finished side you want to show when your project is complete—think of it as the "pretty side." The wrong side is usually duller or less detailed and is meant to stay hidden inside seams or linings. When a tutorial says to sew with “right sides together,” it means you're stitching the pretty sides facing each other so the seam ends up hidden.

Turning means flipping your fabric right side out after sewing it inside-out, which hides the raw edges and reveals the clean, finished side. Once turned, many projects call for a topstitch—a neat, visible line of stitching on the outside of the fabric. This helps keep seams in place and gives your project a professional look.

Learning these terms early on makes it much easier to follow any easy sewing tutorial for beginners, whether you're making a pouch, pillow, or simple bag!

Steps to Make This Jewelry Pouch

  1. Start by cutting 3 rectangles. Two of them should be the same fabric and measure 4.5 inches (width) by 9 inches (height). The third should be a complimentary fabric for the inside pocket. I love getting fat quarter sets for this projects since they come with a bunch of complimentary fabrics and I have a lot of fun mixing and matching! This rectangle should measure 4.5 inches (width) by 7 inches (height). This will be folded in half to make the pocket and the folded size will be 4.5 inches (width) by 3.5 inches (height).
  2. You will also need to cut 2 rectangles of medium weight fusible interfacing. I love buying this in rolls from Amazon. I use it on nearly every project to reinforce the structure of pouches, wallets, pockets, etc. Cut 1 rectangle to 4.5 x 9 inches and the other to 4.5 x 3.5 inches.
  3. Iron the interfacing to the wrong sides of one of the long rectangles and one side of the short rectangle.
  4. Sew a handmade tag onto the right side of the long rectangle with the interfacing. It should be centered and about 2 inches from the top of the fabric.
  5. Fold the pocket in half and top stitch along the top fold.
  6. Clip the pocket to the bottom of the right side of the long rectangle (without interfacing). Match the raw edges.
  7. Attach the ribbon to the right side center top and center bottom of the long rectangle (with interfacing).
  8. Place right sides together and sew around the edges leaving a small gap on the side for turning.
  9. Turn fabric right side out using a corner turner. Make sure the pocket is on the side without the handmade tag.
  10. Use an iron to smooth out your fabric.
  11. Top stitch around the entire outline. This will also close the small gap you used to turn.
  12. Place jewelry and tie closed!
